Vietnam Aims to Boost Economic Ties in ASEAN–Russia Partnership

Vietnam has positioned itself as a key player in enhancing the collaboration between ASEAN and Russia, following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung emphasized Vietnam’s substantial contributions to the summit, particularly in promoting ASEAN’s central role and backing initiatives to intensify the strategic partnership between the bloc and Russia.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, the Vietnamese delegation focused on fostering dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful conflict resolution, while underscoring the importance of adhering to international law. Additionally, Vietnam pushed for extended collaboration in crucial sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation.

The summit resulted in the adoption of new frameworks designed to bolster ASEAN–Russia ties through the year 2030, with energy identified as a primary component of this partnership. Reflecting its dedication to nurturing future regional cooperation, Vietnam announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027.

During the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Vladimir Putin on the sidelines, where both leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their dialogue centered on expanding cooperation across various fields including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.

Vietnam expressed optimism that the summit’s achievements will not only solidify ASEAN–Russia relations but also enhance regional stability. These developments are expected to generate new opportunities for economic growth and cooperation throughout the Eurasian region.
