Thailand’s Solar Market Dominated: 99.3% Panels Imported from China

As Thailand gears up for a large-scale solar initiative aimed at transforming its energy landscape, the country has experienced a dramatic increase in solar panel imports. From January to July 2026, Thailand imported solar panels worth $426.7 million, marking an 88.7% increase compared to the same period the previous year. This surge is largely attributed to imports from China, which accounted for a staggering 99.3% of the total, according to data provided by Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce and Customs Department.

China’s contribution to Thailand’s solar panel imports rose sharply, with imports valued at $423.9 million—a 107.1% increase from the previous year. In contrast, other suppliers such as Singapore and Hong Kong played a minimal role, each contributing around 0.3% to the total import value. This influx of solar panels aligns with Thailand’s ambitious plans to roll out a household solar installation programme.

The Thai government is preparing to launch a subsidy programme that could offer financial assistance of approximately 50,000 Thai Baht per household. The initial phase of this initiative targets one million households but could expand to 1.5 million if successful. The programme aims not only to reduce household electricity costs but also to stimulate the growth of a domestic clean-energy supply chain by encouraging more rooftop and ground-mounted solar installations.

In parallel, Thailand is exploring strategies to bolster its domestic solar manufacturing capabilities. The government is in discussions with the Ministry of Labour to create training programmes focused on solar panel assembly, installation, and maintenance. Additionally, talks with the Board of Investment are underway to consider reducing duties on production inputs that are not readily available within the country.

This comprehensive approach signifies Thailand’s commitment to fostering renewable energy solutions while seeking to decrease its reliance on foreign imports in the future. By investing in both infrastructure and human capital, Thailand hopes to position itself as a leader in sustainable energy within the region.
