Amidst the backdrop of their upcoming 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2026, Vietnam and Norway are deepening their collaboration across various sectors, focusing particularly on trade, renewable energy, and maritime development. A recent meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål underscored both nations’ commitment to enhancing economic and political relations.

A significant development from the discussions was the advancement towards a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states, which includes Norway. After 14 years of negotiations, the agreement aims to improve market access, foster business partnerships, and offer greater certainty to investors. The Vietnamese side is urging the completion of ratification procedures to expedite the agreement’s implementation.

The meeting also placed importance on their Green Strategic Partnership, initiated in April, highlighting its role in promoting sustainable development and energy transition. Vietnam extended an invitation to Norwegian businesses and financial institutions to invest further in areas like renewable energy, maritime transport, and high-tech aquaculture. Norway, in turn, expressed its intent to expand collaboration in marine management, green shipping, and the circular economy.

Regional cooperation featured prominently in the dialogue, with both countries agreeing to strengthen their partnership within the ASEAN-Norway framework from 2026 to 2030. This cooperation will focus on the blue economy, energy transition, connectivity, innovation, and sustainable development. The discussions also touched on technology and expertise sharing to aid in achieving carbon neutrality and bolstering energy security.

Moreover, both nations reiterated their pledge to enhance coordination between their foreign ministries and provide mutual support in regional and international forums, including the United Nations. They emphasized the significance of free trade, adherence to international law, and the principles outlined in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Ultimately, the meeting highlighted a shared commitment from Vietnam and Norway to expand economic opportunities, fortify diplomatic relationships, and advance sustainable development initiatives, underscoring the enduring partnership between the two countries.
