Vietnam has underscored its increasing influence in strengthening ties between ASEAN and Russia, following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue. The Vietnamese Foreign Minister, Lê Hoài Trung, emphasized the pivotal role Vietnam played in the summit’s success, highlighting the country’s efforts in promoting ASEAN’s central role and enhancing the strategic partnership between the bloc and Russia.

Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng led the Vietnamese delegation, which focused on fostering dialogue and cooperation, advocating for peaceful dispute resolution and adherence to international law. Vietnam proposed expanding collaboration in vital sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. This initiative aligns with the new frameworks adopted at the summit, aiming to bolster ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a cornerstone of this partnership.

In a move reflecting Vietnam’s commitment to nurturing future regional cooperation, the country announced it would host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. On the periphery of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to expanding the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. These talks primarily centered on widening cooperation across various sectors, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.

The outcomes of the summit are expected to fortify ASEAN–Russia relations, contributing to enhanced regional stability. Vietnam expressed confidence that these developments will pave the way for new economic growth opportunities and cooperation across the Eurasian region.
