The Australian Capital Territory’s Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, and Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Hùng Tâm recently held discussions to bolster cooperation between the cities of Canberra, Hà Nội, and Ho Chi Minh City. This meeting has set the stage for Barr’s impending visit to Việt Nam, which Ambassador Tâm anticipates will pave the way for new collaborative ventures. During their talks, Tâm emphasized the promising potential for joint initiatives in areas such as renewable energy, innovation, education, tourism, and smart urban development.

In a bid to foster enduring partnerships, the ambassador suggested the creation of a friendship and cooperation agreement between Hà Nội and the ACT. This proposal aims to facilitate sustained collaboration across various sectors, reflecting a mutual commitment to enhancing ties. Barr, who is scheduled to visit Việt Nam for the first time, acknowledged the strategic significance of Việt Nam as a key economic partner for the ACT, according to its international engagement strategy.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the proposed sister-city relationship with Hà Nội, Barr highlighted the immense potential for joint efforts in promoting a green transition. He pointed out the opportunities to collaborate on electric transport and renewable energy projects, aligning with shared objectives to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. These initiatives signify a collective effort to address global environmental challenges and reinforce the bilateral relationship.

Additionally, Barr conveyed his openness to engaging in public diplomacy activities, particularly during future visits by senior Vietnamese officials to Australia. This readiness underscores a commitment to deepening diplomatic and cultural connections between the two regions, further solidifying their partnership.
