As Thailand and Vietnam commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations, they have elevated their bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking a milestone in their collaboration across political, economic, and technological spheres. This development was highlighted during the official visit of Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand, where both nations underscored their commitment to deepening mutual cooperation.
During this visit, four pivotal agreements were signed, focusing on economic cooperation, advancements in science and technology, educational initiatives, and aviation development. These agreements are part of a broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for 2026–2031, which aims to foster collaboration in various sectors and address shared challenges.
Security and defense emerged as crucial areas of cooperation, with both countries agreeing to tackle transnational issues such as online scams and illegal fishing. The leaders also discussed enhancing economic ties to navigate global uncertainties, with an eye towards supporting private sector growth. A key objective is to increase bilateral trade beyond the current $22.1 billion, with a target of reaching $24 billion soon.
Technology and innovation are at the forefront of this partnership, with plans to collaborate on satellite technology, semiconductors, agricultural biotechnology, and other emerging industries. Both nations are set to promote integration in their supply chains, enhance local economic connectivity, and invest in green energy initiatives to boost regional competitiveness and energy security.
President Tô Lâm reiterated Vietnam’s dedication to fortifying its relationship with Thailand, emphasizing joint efforts to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development in Southeast Asia. This renewed partnership reflects a shared vision for a prosperous and secure future in the region.
