Vietnam and Laos have conducted a mid-year review of their cooperative efforts for 2026, focusing on bolstering partnerships in key sectors such as investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development. The meeting, held in Da Nang, allowed officials from both nations to evaluate the progress made in the initial eight months of the year and to set priorities for the rest of 2026. This cooperative initiative continues to reinforce the economic bonds between the two countries.

In terms of economic growth, Vietnamese enterprises have been active in Laos, initiating 20 new investment projects valued at $638.3 million within the first seven months of the year. This underscores Laos’s status as Vietnam’s largest overseas investment hub, with approximately 300 projects supported by Vietnamese investors totaling over $7 billion. Meanwhile, bilateral trade has flourished, reaching about $1.3 billion in the first half of 2026. These developments highlight the deepening economic ties between the neighboring countries.

The collaborative efforts extend beyond trade and investment, with significant advancements in energy, transportation, construction, and infrastructure connectivity. Both nations are committed to enhancing these areas to improve their economic links. Additionally, education and human resource development are pivotal components of their cooperation. In 2026, Vietnam is offering 1,300 scholarships to Lao students and has earmarked $43 million in aid for Laos as part of a broader assistance program running through to 2030.

Furthermore, both countries have agreed to enhance coordination on major projects, address investment challenges, and strengthen economic connections across the broader Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region. This commitment to collaboration ensures that both nations can navigate and resolve any obstacles that may arise, thus fostering a more robust and integrated regional economy.
