Vietnam’s global diplomatic engagement was recently bolstered by a five-day visit to the United States and Canada by Tô Lâm, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President. His visits, which took place from September 20 to 25, marked a significant step in enhancing Vietnam’s international standing and fostering deeper bilateral relations.
During his visit, Tô Lâm participated in the high-level General Debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly session, marking his first appearance at the UN in his current role. This visit also represented his inaugural trip to both the US and Canada following Vietnam’s latest political transition. In his address at the UN, Tô Lâm emphasized Vietnam’s dedication to supporting global and regional issues and advocated for stronger multilateral cooperation with an increased role for the UN in tackling international challenges.
In addition to his UN engagement, Tô Lâm conducted meetings with senior officials, lawmakers, business leaders, academics, and Vietnamese communities in both countries. Discussions with US officials focused on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring areas of mutual interest, such as trade and investment. The visit to Canada culminated in an agreement to elevate Vietnam-Canada relations to a Strategic Partnership, supported by a comprehensive action plan targeting several cooperative areas.
Vietnamese officials and businesses also utilized the visit to engage in separate discussions with partners in the US and Canada. These interactions led to agreements covering diverse sectors, including trade, investment, technology, education, energy, and transport. Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung emphasized the importance of implementing the commitments made during the trip, highlighting areas like science and technology, trade, investment, defense and security, energy, and education as priorities for further cooperation.
In particular, Lê Hoài Trung noted the potential for expanded collaboration in nuclear energy, signaling an emerging area for Vietnam’s international cooperation efforts. As Vietnam seeks to solidify and expand its global partnerships, these recent engagements in North America are likely to play a crucial role in shaping its future diplomatic and economic endeavors.
