Vietnam, Malaysia Enhance Economic Ties Through Strengthened Regional Defense Partnership

In a bid to bolster regional stability and enhance bilateral relations, Vietnam and Malaysia are actively seeking to deepen their defence cooperation. This was underscored during discussions in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Phan Văn Giang and Malaysia’s outgoing Ambassador Dato’ Tan Yang Thai. The talks highlighted the ambassador’s significant contributions to the strengthening of ties between the two nations.

General Giang acknowledged the advancements made in the defence sector, emphasizing the importance of regular military exchanges, policy dialogues, and collaborative training initiatives. He also pointed to the effective coordination between the countries at both international and multilateral events as a testament to their growing partnership. The Vietnamese defence minister expressed a desire to maintain momentum by implementing existing agreements and enhancing high-level meetings and defence cooperation frameworks.

In an effort to further this cooperation, Giang extended an invitation to Malaysia’s defence leaders and companies to participate in the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2026, scheduled to take place in Hanoi. This event represents an opportunity for deeper engagement and collaboration between the defence sectors of the two countries.

The outgoing Malaysian ambassador conveyed his gratitude to Vietnam’s defence ministry and military for their support during his tenure. He expressed optimism that the defence ties between Malaysia and Vietnam would continue to flourish, ultimately supporting peace and prosperity throughout the region.
