Vietnam and Canada have taken a significant step towards deepening their bilateral relations by adopting an Action Plan aimed at implementing their Strategic Partnership. This development was announced following discussions between Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in Ottawa. The plan is designed to convert the commitments made by the leaders of both countries into tangible programs and projects.
The comprehensive Action Plan outlines a wide array of areas for closer cooperation, including political and diplomatic relations, trade and investment, science and technology, digital transformation, healthcare, education, energy security, sustainable development, transport, infrastructure, defense and security, law enforcement, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. The aim is to foster stronger ties and promote mutual benefits across these sectors.
Both ministers have agreed to regularly review and update the plan, emphasizing the need for robust coordination between government agencies, local authorities, and businesses to ensure effective implementation. They have also committed to strengthening existing bilateral consultation mechanisms and exploring additional dialogue frameworks that hold strategic importance.
In addition to domestic collaboration, the two countries are looking to enhance their cooperation on the international stage. They discussed regional and global issues and agreed to work together through multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, ASEAN, and APEC. Notably, Vietnam and Canada will support each other in hosting APEC meetings in 2027 and 2029. Vietnam also expressed support for Canada’s hosting of the Francophonie Summit in 2028.
This Action Plan signifies a proactive approach by both nations to not only strengthen their bilateral ties but also to assert their collaborative presence in international affairs. The mutual support for future international meetings underscores their commitment to fostering a strong partnership in a rapidly changing global landscape.
