In a recent meeting held on September 3, Vietnamese officials specializing in science and technology engaged with representatives from Japan’s House of Representatives to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in strategic technology sectors. The conversation revolved around key areas such as semiconductor research, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy. Vietnam is also seeking Japan’s assistance in developing its workforce to support these industries.
The two countries are already collaborating under the NEXUS joint research program, which focuses on co-funding initiatives related to semiconductor research, including chip design, advanced materials, and manufacturing technologies. Plans are in place to extend this cooperation beyond 2027, showcasing the long-term commitment both nations have towards advancing semiconductor technologies.
Vietnam has expressed a strong interest in expanding the scope of NEXUS to become an annual collaboration platform that would also encompass research in artificial intelligence, new materials, renewable energy, and biomedicine. The proposal includes establishing closer business collaborations and enhancing training programs for engineers and experts who are crucial to strategic technology fields.
In addition to seeking advancements in technology and workforce development, Vietnam is eager for Japan’s support in building sovereign AI capabilities and creating Vietnamese-language large language models. A joint working group from both countries is anticipated to convene in October to further discuss technology transfer and bolster business connections, particularly in the semiconductor sector.
Japan has shown a keen interest in Vietnam’s approach to semiconductor development, labor policies, and its comprehensive energy strategy that includes expanding nuclear power. As Vietnam progresses towards a diversified energy mix, combining conventional sources with renewables and nuclear power, the country emphasizes the need for significant investment and a highly skilled workforce. Vietnam remains hopeful that Japan will be a pivotal partner in developing the necessary energy infrastructure to support its burgeoning high-tech industries.
