VNREDSat-1 Boosts Vietnam-France Economic Partnership in Space Technology Sector

The VNREDSat-1 satellite program stands as a pivotal milestone in the collaborative efforts between Vietnam and France in space technology. This initiative has not only paved the way for future endeavors focusing on next-generation satellites but has also emphasized technology transfer, training, and enhancing Vietnam’s domestic capabilities in this domain. VNREDSat-1, launched on May 7, 2013, marked Vietnam’s debut in Earth observation satellites and was officially transferred for operational duties by September of the same year. Originally designed to last five years, it remarkably continues to function in 2026, celebrating 14 years of service.

Beyond its operational achievements, the program has been instrumental in expanding Vietnam’s technical expertise. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training sessions in both France and Vietnam, acquiring skills in system design, satellite operations, and problem-solving. Over time, these engineers transitioned from relying solely on transferred procedures to independently resolving technical issues, showcasing a significant growth in their problem-solving capabilities. Moreover, Vietnam established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that manages imaging requests and oversees the satellite’s control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 images for various purposes, including environmental and resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, and security-related activities.

Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, highlighted the program’s role in laying a vital technical and human-resource foundation for upcoming satellite projects. He emphasized that achieving greater technological independence would necessitate advancements in several areas, such as satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems. This strategic push towards self-reliance signifies a commitment to bolstering Vietnam’s position in space technology.

A significant development in this ongoing cooperation occurred during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, a declaration of intent was signed between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies. This agreement aims to foster long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation, with a particular focus on developing a next-generation Earth observation system and exploring technological options for the proposed VNREDSat-2.

Future initiatives are expected to prioritize Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. Areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads present promising opportunities for Vietnam to enhance its domestic expertise. The overarching goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, ultimately enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to design, operate, troubleshoot, and independently develop future satellite technologies.
