On September 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing convened in Hà Nội, marking the Myanmar leader’s inaugural visit to Vietnam in his new capacity. During the meeting, both leaders expressed a strong commitment to enhancing their countries’ bilateral ties and expanding collaborative efforts across various sectors. Hưng reiterated Vietnam’s backing for Myanmar’s initiatives aimed at achieving stability, fostering reconciliation and dialogue, and advancing economic development.
President Min Aung Hlaing acknowledged Vietnam’s impressive socio-economic progress and its growing influence within the region and on the global stage. He expressed a keen interest in learning from Vietnam’s developmental strategies. Additionally, he emphasized Myanmar’s dedication to sustaining its longstanding friendship and broad-ranging cooperation with Vietnam. The leaders celebrated the recent advancements in their bilateral relations and concurred on the importance of increasing high-level exchanges to bolster political trust.
The discussions underscored the significance of reinvigorating key cooperative mechanisms, particularly in trade, security, and defense. As both nations anticipate that defense and security collaboration will become a cornerstone of their partnership, they plan to intensify efforts to combat cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Collaborative endeavors will also include expanding military training programs, facilitating exchanges among young officers, and addressing non-traditional security challenges.
Economic collaboration was another focal point of the meeting. Both sides showed enthusiasm for exploring ways to boost trade and update existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar extended an invitation to Vietnamese investors to venture into sectors like telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. They also deliberated over enhancing infrastructure and air connectivity, resuming direct flights, and developing joint tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism.
On regional issues, Vietnam committed to its ongoing cooperation with ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both countries underscored their support for peaceful dispute resolution in line with international law. Additionally, Prime Minister Hưng invited President Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and preside over the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. In turn, the Myanmar president extended an invitation to Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time.
