During the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with the United States in Manila, Vietnam emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration between ASEAN and the U.S. in various sectors, including trade, artificial intelligence, digital technology, and energy transition. Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung praised the United States for its commitment to ensuring peace, stability, and development in the region. He urged both parties to swiftly conclude a new comprehensive work program to bolster their partnership.
Minister Trung highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation in crucial areas such as trade and investment, the digital economy, semiconductors, science and technology, innovation, and energy transition. He also called for the U.S. to continue its support for the Mekong sub-region, focusing on vital issues like water management, climate change adaptation, infrastructure development, and workforce training.
On the topic of regional security, Trung stressed maintaining peace and resolving disputes through dialogue and adherence to international law. He welcomed the U.S. support for ASEAN’s stance on the South China Sea and encouraged Washington to aid in strengthening an open, inclusive, and rules-based regional order centered around ASEAN.
Addressing the situation in the Middle East, Trung advocated for increased dialogue and the restoration of secure maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz. He underscored the necessity of safeguarding freedom of navigation in accordance with international law.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed America’s support for ASEAN, recognizing Southeast Asia’s strategic and economic significance. He promised ongoing U.S. investment in supply chains, the digital economy, energy security, power-grid connectivity, and civil nuclear cooperation. Additionally, ASEAN and the U.S. agreed to enhance economic ties, collaborate in high-value industries, and improve coordination in addressing challenges such as terrorism, cybercrime, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and online scams.
