In a significant move to tackle the issue of counterfeit goods, Thailand is set to destroy more than 2 million items seized in cases of intellectual property infringement. This initiative is part of the country’s broader strategy to enhance the enforcement of intellectual property rights and curb the proliferation of fake products. This year, authorities are destroying a total of 2.08 million confiscated items, marking a 36.45% increase from the 1.52 million items destroyed in 2025. The estimated value of these goods has also surged to THB2.14 billion, compared to THB900.91 million the previous year.
The assortment of goods slated for destruction includes a wide range of consumer products such as clothing, watches, bags, electronic devices, vehicle parts, medicines, cosmetics, food, and beverages. To effectively combat counterfeit activities, Thai authorities have been actively conducting enforcement operations targeting both online and offline marketplaces. This comprehensive approach aims to dismantle networks involved in the distribution of counterfeit goods and safeguard the interests of legitimate businesses and consumers.
The destruction process is being conducted at facilities equipped with environmental management systems located in Samut Prakan and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. These measures are taken to ensure that the disposal of counterfeit goods does not pose any environmental hazards or impact the health and safety of nearby communities. By ensuring environmentally sound disposal practices, Thailand underscores its commitment to responsible waste management alongside its crackdown on counterfeit goods.
Despite these efforts, Thailand continues to be listed on the Watch List under the 2026 Special 301 Report, which evaluates countries on their intellectual property protection and enforcement. To address this, Thailand is collaborating with the United States on an intellectual property work plan. This initiative aims to bolster enforcement mechanisms, minimize counterfeit sales, enhance consumer protection, and foster a more transparent and business-friendly environment.
