This significant dialogue, which took place at 6pm local time in the Philippines, was convened to address ongoing issues between Thailand and Cambodia, marking an important diplomatic effort in the region.
As the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Philippines spearheaded the initiative, aimed at fostering dialogue and strengthening regional ties. Rachada Dhanadirek, spokesperson for the Thai Prime Minister’s Office, confirmed the Philippines’ leading role in organizing this crucial meeting. The leaders seized this opportunity to underscore their countries’ dedication to peace and dialogue.
Subsequent to their discussions, the three leaders took the stage for a press conference. President Marcos, in his role as ASEAN chair, was the first to address the media, followed by Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia and finally, Prime Minister Anutin of Thailand. Anutin expressed gratitude towards President Marcos for facilitating the meeting, emphasizing the productive and future-oriented nature of his exchanges with the Cambodian leader. He described the talks as candid and of substantial significance.
Prime Minister Anutin highlighted the deep-rooted connections between Thailand and Cambodia, emphasizing their geographical and cultural proximity. He pointed out that conflict inevitably leads to mutual loss and suffering, reinforcing the importance of peace. The meeting, he noted, was a chance to renew commitments to dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
The Thai leader called for a renewed chapter in Thailand-Cambodia relations, driven by sincerity, goodwill, and a collective resolve to overcome existing challenges. He stressed the necessity for both nations to look beyond past disputes and work collaboratively towards a harmonious future, setting the stage for a strengthened bilateral relationship.
