In a significant diplomatic development, Thai Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and French President Emmanuel Macron have decided to enhance the bilateral relationship between Thailand and France, elevating it to a strategic partnership. This agreement was reached during their official discussions held at the Élysée Palace in Paris. Their meeting emphasized the importance of broadening cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology. The leaders also took the opportunity to assess current regional situations, particularly concerning Cambodia and Myanmar.
The two nations have committed to increasing collaboration in several key industries such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France reiterated its support for finalizing the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement negotiations within the year. This agreement, which Thai officials believe could open substantial economic opportunities, was initially launched in 2013, suspended in 2014, and resumed in 2023. France’s commitment highlights a mutual interest in strengthening economic ties through this pivotal trade agreement.
On matters of security, Thailand and France pledged to enhance their joint efforts in defense and cybersecurity. This includes tackling cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats, reflecting a shared concern over digital security and the need for robust international cooperation in this domain. Additionally, Thailand reaffirmed its dedication to addressing border disputes with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law frameworks, underscoring its commitment to regional stability.
Looking forward, both governments have announced the implementation of the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership from 2026 to 2028. This plan is intended to lay the groundwork for a formal strategic partnership, marking a new chapter in the bilateral relations between the two nations. The strategic partnership is expected to further enhance mutual interests and cooperation.
During his stay in France, Anutin Charnvirakul also engaged with top executives from several major French companies, including Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group. These meetings aimed at encouraging increased investment in Thailand’s burgeoning high-tech and future industries. French corporations expressed their confidence in Thailand’s investment climate, with Airbus notably confirming its intention to expand aviation and engineering activities in the country, signaling a positive outlook for future economic collaboration.
